The Toyota GR Yaris was the biggest surprise of 2020 – a completely bespoke bodied, all-wheel drive rally homologation special that was the petrolhead’s dream.

Well time moves on and Toyota felt an update was necessary, adding lots of nice additions and fixing a few of the Yaris’ gripes along the way. Firstly, the 3-cylinder 1.6 litre turbocharged engine has been given a rework, now making 276bhp (nice for retro JDM fans) and 390Nm, still going to all four wheels via a six speed manual gearbox. But now there’s the option of an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifting should you want it.

The styling has had a little glow up too, with a new front bumper and rear diffuser, which houses a new, throatier exhaust. But inside is where the biggest changes have happened.

One of the biggest criticisms of the original GR Yaris was that the seats were too high and the view out was like a letterbox, making it hard to see at junctions. Well, there’s now a whole new dashboard which sits 50mm lower, housing the screen and buttons in one big slightly retro slab of dash. The seats are also 25mm lower, while the rear view mirror is 35mm higher, so the view out is massively improved.

The most fun hot hatch on sale has been made better in every way, this has to be the car of 2024! And you could win one right here on BOTB!
