This is Hyundai’s first entry into the hot hatch market and they’ve done so with a bang, this i30N has gone down incredibly well in the press, with many magazines saying it’s as good as the Golf GTi. High praise indeed. It’s not hard to see why either – visually the i30N is incredible, with an aggressive front end, lovely 19-inch alloys and a twin exhaust setup working really well with the i30 shape to really help it stand out.
They haven’t skimped on the mechanicals either, with this FWD hot hatch getting a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which in this ‘Performance’ spec gets 276bhp and 390Nm of torque. That’s enough for a 0-62mph dash done in a smidge under 6 seconds and a limited 155mph top speed. And for the first time, the 2021 facelift brings with it the option of a 7spd dual clutch gearbox for an additional £1500.
But the i30N really excels in the corners, with handling that can match or exceed the best of its rivals. The biggest surprise is the noise it makes when in N-Mode (and the N stands for Nürburgring!), where the exhaust shoots forth pops and cracks like a WRC car and a level of noise not far off them either!
Our reviewer Tim declared the i30N Performance to be the best hot hatch on sale today (and he's not usually wrong!)
